Esterilizadores de Biberones

What is a bottle sterilizer?
In the field of maternity, when we talk about sterilizers, we usually refer to sterilizers mainly for nipples, bottles and pacifiers. Its function is to destroy or eliminate any germ or bacteria present in these utensils through physical, chemical or gaseous procedures.
We all know the importance of hygiene and cleanliness of the utensils we use to feed our baby, especially in the first 6 months of life.
This is because babies are born without a fully developed immune system, so they are more likely to be attacked by germs or bacteria.
For example, one of the most common infections is gastroenteritis. Currently, this is one of the most common reasons for pediatric consultation and hospitalization in Europe.
To avoid infections like this or at least reduce the risk, it is important to sterilize your baby’s bottles, nipples and pacifiers since they are in direct contact with his mouth.
It is clear that sterilization is necessary, but that does not mean that we necessarily need a sterilizer.
In the case of bottles, nipples and pacifiers, it is usually sufficient to sterilize them once before the first use. To do so, we simply have to boil them in water for about 10 minutes. From there, it will be enough to wash them thoroughly with water and neutral soap each time we use them.
Doing that is enough, but if you are going to feel calmer and safer sterilizing bottles, pacifiers and nipples every time you use them, then it is worth buying a sterilizer.
Types of Sterilizers
There are different types of sterilizers depending on the disinfection system they use:
• Cold sterilizer. Use disinfectant tablets or liquid that we put in a container with water that covers the objects that we want to disinfect. It is comfortable because it does not need heat. In return, it takes about 30 minutes to perform the disinfection.
• Microwave sterilizer. It is one of the most used today, especially for its ease of use. They have a microwave-safe container where we put the utensils to disinfect and cover them with water. In less than 15 minutes it will be ready.
• Steam sterilizer. It is an electrical device made up of several «plants». On the «ground floor» we have a plate that generates heat. On the «first floor» is where we put about 200 ml of water which, due to the heat produced by the plate on the «ground floor», will be transformed into steam that will be responsible for sterilizing the utensils that we have placed in «Second floor» and following.
It takes about 10 minutes to complete, it’s clean, and it can sterilize quite a few utensils at once. On the contrary, it is the most expensive and the one that occupies the most. You have to be careful where it is placed because it releases water vapor and its case gets quite hot. Placing it in a suitable place and taking the appropriate measures each time we handle it, we will not have to worry.
How to choose the sterilizer that suits you best?
When choosing the most suitable sterilizer for you, I suggest that you take into account these 4 factors:
Disinfection system that you use
As I mentioned before, there are 3 types of sterilizers: cold, microwave or steam.
The most widely used today are microwave and steam sterilizers. Unlike the «cold» one that uses chemical products to disinfect, the other two use water, so they are more «natural». In addition, you will not have to rinse the utensils once they have been disinfected nor will there be any trace of taste or smell on them.
Also, in the long run they will be cheaper, since the only ingredient they use is water. However, «cold» sterilizers require a chemical product (pills or liquid) that you will have to buy as you use it.
Taking all this into account, I opted for the microwave or steam sterilizer rather than a «cold» one.
Disinfection time
It is clear that spending 10 minutes a day to sterilize is not the same as 30. If you have enough time to do it, this will not be a weight factor when deciding on one or another sterilizer.
However, if you are one of those who spend the whole day running fast, you will greatly value the time it takes to sterilize different utensils because, at certain times, 5-10 more minutes can give you life.
Size and Capacity
The size of the sterilizer is important, especially if you have little space at home. As I have mentioned before, with steam sterilizers you have to take a series of precautions that are not necessary in microwave sterilizers. This undoubtedly affects where we put it when using it.
Therefore, it is important to ensure that we have a suitable place to use the steam sterilizer. If you don’t have that space, opt for a microwave sterilizer.
Regarding the microwave sterilizer, we just have to make sure that it is suitable for our microwave.
Another aspect to consider is the capacity. That is, how many bottles and nipples is it capable of disinfecting at the same time.
Before I said that time is a factor to take into account, but it is useless to have the fastest sterilizer on the market if it only sterilizes one bottle at a time.
To find out what capacity you need, check how many bottles and nipples (and what type: standard mouth or wide mouth) you use on average per day.
Depending on the number of utensils and how many times you want to do the sterilization process per day (the more times, the more time you will need), so you will need more or less capacity.
It is important to note that most sterilizers are designed to disinfect bottles and nipples, but not other types of utensils such as breast pumps, pacifiers, grippers, plates, etc. However, some do have an adjustable size so you can sanitize more than just bottles and nipples.
Therefore, depending on what you want to disinfect, you will have to opt for one type of sterilizer or another.
Accessories available
It is not a relevant factor, but they always come in handy. Some sterilizers include accessories such as grippers, pacifiers, or bottles. Others, on the other hand, come only with the sterilizer.
What is the best Sterilizer?
It depends on your needs and the resources you have. For your choice to be correct, it is important that you take into account the 4 factors that I have mentioned before.
